Secretary Vilsack highlights recent supply chain disruptions to show the necessity.
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack unveiled a new federal grant initiative called the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program, with $500 million in grant money to stimulate American-made fertilizer.
Under the program, grants will be used to support “independent, innovative and sustainable American fertilizer production” to supply American farmers. The goal is to expand the manufacturing and processing of fertilizer and nutrient alternatives in the U.S. and its territories.
In announcing the program, Secretary Vilsack said, “Recent supply chain disruptions have shown just how critical it is to invest in the agricultural supply chain here at home.”
In industrial agricultural systems, the trinity of key nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—is supplied in the form of synthetic fertilizers like urea and anhydrous ammonia (for nitrogen), potash (for potassium), and ammonium phosphates (for phosphorus).
Ukraine has been a prime source of fertilizer imports.
